Cornwall and Devon Online Homebirth Group
Last night’s free online homebirth group was amazing- it really did feel like a community coming together to revel in the wonder and realities of homebirth.
A huge thank you to Sam for sharing her own experiences of homebirth – a slow labour resulting in a triumphant homebirth followed by a second birth so fast that the pool didn’t get filled. The theme of truly knowing your midwife and having that trusting relationship came up a lot during this session- and it’s something that we feel so passionate about as independent midwives- continuity of care is the most evidence-based way to improve outcomes for you and your baby during pregnancy, birth and postnatal including a decrease in chance of preterm labour and epidural use, and a huge increase in straightforward birth and positive postnatal experiences (https://www.cochrane.org/evidence/CD004667_are-midwife-continuity-care-models-versus-other-models-care-childbearing-women-better-women-and).
We also discussed the evidence for homebirth being a safe choice for most women and babies, and the realities of transferring to hospital. More info on that here: (https://www.sarawickham.com/research-updates/is_home_birth_safe/).
We believe that all women should have the option to give birth at home. If you do not feel confident that your local NHS trust will be able to support you (due to staffing issues, risk factors or more), it is sometimes possible to request funding independent midwifery care. There is more info here and please get in touch if you would like to explore this option.
